Research methodology
FlowState 369 is a scholar-practitioner platform. The theory is public, the method is public, and every number can show its work. This page is the method.
01The stance
Dr. J Fraser, Ed.D. works as a scholar-practitioner: theory and action held as one motion. Theory without practice is insufficient. Practice without theory is unsustainable. FlowState 369 is that stance built into software.
The object of the work is the gap between what a person believes and what a person builds. Organizational scholarship named this gap half a century ago: Argyris and Schön separated what people say they do from what they actually do, and showed the two split routinely and invisibly. Dr. J Fraser’s doctoral research found the same split written into strategic plans themselves: across sixty-seven planning documents from five metropolitan school districts, what a plan commits to in its values and what it commits to in its structures pull apart, and the distance is legible on the page.
The engine that closes the gap is the 369 cycle. Paper: the idea, written down. Performance: the execution. Practice: the execution become identity, when it stops requiring effort and starts requiring honesty. Learning: the honest read of the performance, the turn most people skip. The learning becomes new paper, and the cycle turns again.
Run with honesty instead of speed, the circle becomes a spiral.
The cycle restates established learning scholarship in operational form: Schön’s reflection-in-action, Kolb’s experiential learning cycle, Freire’s insistence that reflection and action only work together. What FlowState adds is instrumentation. The platform does not just assert the cycle. It measures it.
02How the platform gathers evidence
Sessions are captured. Every working session ends with the same four questions: what did we intend, what actually happened, what did we learn, what changes next. The answers are logged and they compound, so no session starts from zero.
Signals are logged. The people doing the work record short, structured reads of what is actually happening: observations, frictions, celebrations, needs. The signal is the atomic unit of evidence on this platform.
Instruments ship with fixtures and thresholds. Every scoring engine is tested against fixtures, known inputs with known correct outputs, so a change that breaks the math is caught before it reaches a person. Validity checks run in code: internal consistency on every scale, and a discriminant wall that keeps one construct statistically distinct from another. When an instrument cannot yet run a check, it reports pending. It does not fake the number.
Numbers are labeled honestly. Every number on the platform is one of two things: measurable today, or marked as needing capture. Never invented. Every number we put in front of you is an estimate we can show our work on.
The unit of analysis is the spiral turn: one full cycle from captured intent to delivered receipt. And some numbers are refused outright: follower counts, raw hours, page views, and satisfaction ratings standing in for change. Reach is not learning. Attention is not behavior. A five-star rating beside an unchanged practice is noise.
03The four measures of the spiral
Four named measures make the method testable. Each one tracks a construct, the real thing behind the number, and each earns its place only if moving the number means the underlying thing moved.
- Spiral velocity
- the time from captured intent to shipped artifact. How long one turn of the cycle takes.
- Operational feedback conductance
- the share of open growth edges that become shipped change. Whether feedback actually travels and lands.
- Learning yield
- the share of turns that produce learning the next turn actually reuses.
- Signal-to-noise
- of everything captured, how much carries real information that changes the work.
04What is public, and what is not
The line between what this platform publishes and what it protects is stated openly, because a methodology that hides its own boundaries is not honest.
Public: the framework definitions, the method on this page, the four measures, the names of the scoring bands, and the scholarship the stance is built on. The coined vocabulary is published at /method so anyone, human or AI engine, can check what these terms mean and who coined them.
Confidential: client data, item banks, and scoring internals. Client data belongs to the client, and several instruments are anonymous by design; the anonymity holds. Item banks stay closed because a published item bank teaches the test, and an instrument people can rehearse stops measuring what it claims. Scoring internals, the weights and the algorithms, stay closed for the same reason, and because they are the working intellectual property of the practice.
Definitions and method are public so the vocabulary can be checked and challenged. Data and internals are closed so the measurement stays honest and the people measured stay protected.
05Work the method
The method is not a spectator sport. If your organization carries a gap between what it believes and what it builds, that gap is measurable, and the first read is honest about what it can and cannot yet see.
